The One Thing AI Can't Disrupt In Procurement

Apr 02, 2026

The world around us is changing at a pace most of us have never experienced in our careers. In the 4 years that I've been running Coaching For Procurement Ltd and the time working in-house before that, I've witnessed Procurement professionals tackle every challenge thrown at them.

And yet the change keeps on coming without giving our people the time to catch their breath.

AI is reshaping how work gets done. Economic uncertainty, technological disruption, and geopolitical instability are all landing at the same time; while the pressure from markets and senior leadership has never been greater. It is, by any measure, an extraordinary moment to be leading in Procurement.

And through all of it, Procurement leaders are being asked to do more, lead more, and navigate more complexity than ever before.

It's a lot. And it can feel like the ground is constantly moving beneath you.

Over the last few weeks I've been in rooms with Procurement leaders on both sides of the pond; team sessions, networking conversations, and plenty of coffee catch-ups in between. Different organisations, different sectors, different challenges.

But not a single conversation has been without a human need underneath it.

And ultimately, despite all of the challenges we are facing...

People haven't changed.

The colleague who needs to feel heard before they'll get on board with a decision. The stakeholder who won't commit until they feel confident they can trust you. The team member who is struggling under the pressure of constant change.

Their needs are the same as they've always been.

To be understood. To feel valued. To have clarity when everything feels uncertain.

This is what sits at the heart of great Procurement leadership. Not the ability to predict what's coming next, but the ability to stay genuinely present with the people in front of you, and meet them where they are.

That is what coaching skills give you.

Rather than just scripts and frameworks to follow, coaching gives you a set of skills that help you slow down enough to notice what someone actually needs and respond in a way that builds trust, unlocks thinking, and moves things forward.

As a Procurement leader, you're already used to solving complex problems. Coaching skills help you apply that same rigour to your relationships; and that is where your real influence lives.

If you're the kind of Procurement leader who believes how you lead matters as much as what you deliver, this is for you.

Registration for my ILM-accredited coaching qualification for Procurement professionals closes 10th April. I'd love to have you in the next cohort.
